Jon Stewart Doth Protest WAY Too Much

1 Share

It doesn’t take much to set Jon Stewart off these days.

It’s part of his shtick, a faux-moral outrage that aligns with the progressive narrative du jour. A recent rant revealed far more about the “Daily Show” host than he realized, though.

The subject? Patriotism. The GOP owns the issue, for obvious reasons. Conservatives don’t bemoan Mount Rushmore, fight to stop July 4th fireworks displays or tear down historical statues.

Chances are, the next Land Acknowledgment screed you hear will be from a nose-ring-clad progressive.

Republicans have their flaws, no doubt, but chances are most won’t apologize for hanging up Old Glory or getting teary-eyed during “Miracle.”

Meanwhile, far-Left heroes like Bad Bunny can’t even stand for “God Bless America,” and Minnesota AG Keith Ellison refused to clap for U.S. Military members coming home from an overseas flight.

Which brings us back to Stewart. He raged during a recent “Daily Show” appearance that his fellow progressives are just as patriotic as conservatives claim to be.

“This country isn’t yours! You don’t own it!”

“You don’t own patriotism! You don’t own Christianity!

“You sure as hell don’t own respect for the bravery and sacrifice of military, police and firefighters!”

Stunning and brave, assuming we take Stewart at his word. To do so, we must ignore the Left’s support for Antifa, which routinely clashes with cops, and protesters hurling bricks at ICE agents. And, if you haven’t seen “The Fall of Minneapolis,” the documentary’s description of BLM protesters burning a police precinct into oblivion is heartbreaking.

Yet just days later, Stewart slammed the Founding Fathers. Why? He had to blame someone other than his fellow Democrats for shutting down the government indefinitely.

“Who is responsible for the government shutdown? I’m gonna go with the Founders, who came up with this f***ing fakakta, overly complex bureaucratic web of nonsense that it takes to get anything done, and I think it’s very difficult when one political party that represents 75 million voters has zero say, authority, heft, and in a functioning political environment that isn’t a zero-sum game, there would have been conversations up until now that took some consideration. Some, I’m not saying a lot … So yeah, once again, f*** you, James Madison. Boom!”

That wasn’t an isolated moment. He’s been less than patriotic for some time. Remember this rant, all the way back in 2016? The trigger? A certain real estate mogul turned politician.

Of course.

“When was America great? What is this time that he speaks of? ‘81 to ‘82? Like, what are we talking about? And who took your country away from you?” Stewart asked. “Who’s country – Who’s country is it? Take up the argument with the Founders. Take it up with the Age of Reason. That’s — All men are created equal. That’s f***ed the whole thing up.”

More recently, Stewart fell in with the hard-Left to declare that America in the 21st century is flat-out racist. His 2022 show on Apple TV+, “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” invited pundit Andrew Sullivan on to essentially attack white people and the USA.

The name of the episode? “The Problem with White People.” Really.

Sullivan, no rock-ribbed conservative, chronicled the episode’s conversation on his Substack page.

[Stewart] also suggested that nothing had been done by whites to support African-Americans from 1619 (yes, he went there) … till now…

His montage of “black voices” insisted that African-Americans are still granted only conditional citizenship, are still barred from owning property — “we don’t own anything!” — and ended with Sister Souljah — yes! — explaining that the thing that kills black people are not bullets, but white people….

Stewart then used crude metrics of inequality to argue, Kendi-style, without any evidence, that the only thing that can possibly explain racial inequality today in America is still “white supremacy.”

Does that sound like a patriotic American to, well, anyone?

To paraphrase Jimmy Failla – when you have the facts, pound the facts. When you’ve got nothing, pound the table.

Stewart sometimes does that. Literally. Other times, he just spins the truth until it’s barely recognizable.

No Kings — Say the Kings

“A King Would Not Allow a Protest called ‘No Kings.'”

Correct. And here are things a King WOULD do:

Intimidate social media companies into not posting items the government dislikes;

Attempt to disarm the noncriminal population;

Force productive citizens to support the livelihood of nonproductive noncitizens;

Forcibly mask and vaccinate the population for the flu–while forcing the same citizens to work to pay for the “free” vaccines while absolving the manufacturers of all liability;

Open the borders and ship illegals (often violent criminals) into states that do not support the King;

Arrest the former and future President for no reason and then charge him with crimes not on the books that he didn’t commit;

Fix elections and threaten to imprison you when you challenge the unorthodox or brazenly illegal activities of election officials.

Need I continue? It seems to me we have already had a King.

I was right. I wish I wasn’t.

News today got me thinking about a quote from T.E Utley’s Lessons of Ulster which was first published in 1975. Below is a scan from my copy.

Click for full page.

For the uninitiated he is referring to the creation of a “no go” zone in Londonderry which lasted from 1969 to 1972.

Lessons of Ulster is a magnificent work. Flicking through it 30 years after having read it I was surprised how perceptive he was – more perceptive that I recall thinking at the time. But as you can see from the marginalia, I didn’t entirely agree with Utley and after hearing the news that the threat of Islamic violence has led to Israeli football fans being banned from attending a match in Birmingham I think I can claim that I was right and Utley wrong. Sure, we may not be seeing barricades but there can be little doubt that the British state lacks the will to face down mob violence.

Lest I am doing Utley a disservice, he did also have this to say:

It… seemed to me that, in some degree at least, the tragic conflict in Ulster might turn out to be a rehearsal for an even more devastating challenge to authority on this side of the Irish Sea.

Although – given that this was written in the 1970s – I think he was probably thinking more about communists and trade unions.

Update: Link fixed.
