Howard Stern Deserved a Better Ending Than This

Howard Stern interrupted his summer vacation this week to announce a new Metallica channel on SiriusXM.

Left unsaid? Stern’s immediate future.

The self-described King of All Media is subject to fiery rumors regarding his satellite radio status. We know his current, five-year contract runs out in December, and he hasn’t extended the deal or shared news of possible negotiations.

The Sun reports the decision has been made, and “The Howard Stern Show” has been canceled. No other outlet has confirmed those details.

Stern didn’t address the Dumbo in the room during his Metallica announcement, either willing to play hardball behind the scenes or unsure of his job security.

Now, The New York Post shared confessions from two unnamed Stern show staffers who suggest the end is, truly, near.

The writing has “been on the wall for well over a year now” that SiriusXM wouldn’t be renewing Howard Stern’s colossal contract — and his employees have been taking advantage, “coasting” on the clock and trolling for new gigs, two current show staffers told The Post.

Is this any way to treat a legend?

The greats often write their finales before the culture beats them to it.

  • Jerry Seinfeld pulled the plug on his eponymous sitcom in 1998 before audiences grew tired of it.
  • Writer/director John Hughes stopped making movies in his early 50s, unwilling to besmirch his legacy with inferior product.
  • NFL great Barry Sanders retired from the Detroit Lions at 31, well before his Hall of Fame skills had the chance to decline.

Others don’t know when to quit. File Stern, Howard in that folder.

What a shame.

Yes, Stern circa 2025 is a parody of his former self. He’s woke and proud of it, coddling politicians if they adhere to his new, far-Left worldview. His “interview” with dementia-addled President Joe Biden may be his most cringeworthy broadcast moment.

And he had plenty of humiliating on-air bits over the decades. Some, like the time he grilled former sitcom star Dana Plato about her sobriety, had ominous repercussions.

Plato took her life shortly after her “Stern” appearance.

The icon who talked a nation through the horrors of 9/11 now cowers before COVID-19. He still conducts his shows from his home studios, according to The New York Post. The reformed shock jock also limits his social interactions due to the virus.

When he does hit the town, he hobnobs with the rich and famous. Yes, the same folks he once skewered during his early days in radio.

That doesn’t diminish from his legacy, one unmatched in his industry. He helped spawn both today’s radio talkers and podcasting elites with his frank discussions and a boundary-breaking style. He made quasi-celebrities out of the show’s producers – Baba booey! – and sailed past station breaks if the show’s content demanded it.

Stern’s interviews proved legendary, even if media analysts took years to realize it. He also rabidly defended free speech during the 1980s and ’90s, using his clout to keep the First Amendment alive and well.

Now? Not so much.

That said, Stern should have realized his inner fire had fizzled some time ago. Instead, he clung to fame, fortune and the trappings of celebrity. His absurd schedule includes Thursdays and Fridays off and an extended Summer vacation each year.

Most teachers don’t have it that good.

RELATED STORIES:

The Post reports his audience size has dramatically shrunk, although SiriusXM doesn’t publicly share his recent ratings. We may never know the full details, but it’s safe to say he draws a fraction of his old, rabidly loyal following.

His YouTube footprint is shrinking, too.

Stern may end up signing a much smaller deal to stay on the air. He might spin the numbers to assuage his ego. There’s little chance SiriusXM can pony up the kind of dough he once earned.

His last contract’s value? $500 million for five years.

Is this any way to treat a King? Absolutely not. He has only himself to blame.

Fallon Invites Gutfeld on ‘Tonight Show,’ Media Meltdown Ensues

You knew it was coming. “The Tonight Show” is trying something new – extending an olive branch to the half of the country it wrote off in 2017. Cue the wailing and gnashing of teeth. Jimmy Fallon’s low-rated showcase, as liberal as any late-night show in the Trump era but less cruel, announced it would host Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld on Thursday. In a sane world, that’s hardly noteworthy.   Fox's Greg Gutfeld praises "great guy" Jimmy Fallon, trashes other late night hosts ahead of Tonight Show appearance. "It’s the biggest crossover since the Harlem Globetrotters visited The Golden Girls." https://t.co/J9hd7QyS8W pic.twitter.com/LcCiuSDasO — Zachary Leeman (@WritingLeeman) August 3, 2025   Gutfeld is funny and quick-witted, and his appeal extends to an audience that long ago fled Fallon’s “Tonight Show.” Conservatives. Why not invite the “Gutfeld!” host on for a funny chat? And, while they’re at it, they might bring a few viewers back into the fold. Or, at the very least, send the message that Fallon actually wants Red State America to tune in.     It’s so crazy it just might work … for a night. And, when you consistently trail in the ratings behind “The Late Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Gutfeld!” as Fallon does, everything is on the table. Yesterday, Fox News’ Lara Trump interviewed progressive star Charlamagne tha God on her show. Guess what happened next? Zero outrage from the Right. And that’s how it should be. Let everyone have a voice, and the best ideas will win. Yet Gutfeld hinted there could be blowback for Fallon by chatting with a right-leaning personality. And he was right. The Mary Sue raged against the decision, courtesy of an op-ed entitled, “So Jimmy Fallon has learned nothing then?” During the 2016 election, one of the biggest “promotional” issues with Donald Trump’s campaign came down to Jimmy Fallon treating Donald Trump like a human on his show instead of holding him accountable. Now, he’s planning on doing the same with Greg Gutfeld. One person is the leader of the free world. The other is a wise-cracking comic who leans to the Right. They’re both monsters, alas, to Mary Sue scribes. You can practically see the splittle flying off the computer screen with this paragraph: Like, can someone at NBC explain this to me like I’m 4? Because there is no reason why this would happen unless Fallon wants some of the MAGA viewers that Gutfeld has. If that’s the case, say it. Open your mouth and say you want the right-wing viewership of Gutfeld! so then we can all stop pretending like you’re some left-leaning host. Cracked.com, a humor web site that supports the Left’s censorial mindset, piled on next. Well, Jimmy Fallon’s shtick on standing up to Trump lasted exactly four seconds. It seems the host is taking perpetual gambling addict Jay Leno’s neutrality advice, which was “Why shoot for just half an audience all the time?” It gets more emotional. Fallon might be trying to use Gutfeld for a ratings boost, but Gutfeld is using him more. We’re all the worse for it. We’re all the worse for a late-night show having a chat with a conservative? Bravo, Cracked … you might just save the country. And then there’s Pajiba. The site opens its story on the subject like a Daily Kos-rejected essay. See for yourself. Greg Gutfeld has no respect for the late-night scene. He is a partisan hack who fancies himself a mischievous little boy because he likes to spout slurs and say mean things while he struggles to find a chair small enough for him. The tiny little guy recently reveled in delight as he claimed white people should start flippantly calling each other members of a notorious fascist ideology (ad sales, y’all) the same way, in his little mind, that African Americans use the N-word. He sucks! He is a bad dude! And Jimmy Fallon is about to give him a spotlight! You know it’s serious because the author is using exclamation points and personal attacks. More outrage may follow as Thursday’s “Tonight Show” episode draws near. We’ll see. And then there’s Bill Maher. The “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has spent years promoting progressive causes, much like Fallon, Stephen Colbert and company. Maher also sits down with right-leaning souls like David Mamet, Kid Rock and Dave Rubin. They agree to disagree, find some common ground and walk away smiling. That’s normal and healthy. Today’s extreme Left is neither. It wants to cancel people who don’t share their views and keep family members at arm’s length if they vote the “wrong” way. It may not matter what convinced Fallon to interview Gutfeld, It’s the right move. And those currently melting down should take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror for disagreeing. UPDATES: Gutfeld shared a rowdy story of how he first met Fallon during their good-natured interview Aug. 7. Fallon quizzed Gutfeld about his FOX Nation game show, “What Did I Miss?” allowing Gutfeld to announce a second season has been greenlit.  The duo didn’t bring up politics directly and kept the banter light. The far-Left Daily Beast raged against the actual interview all the same, calling out Fallon’s “softball” questions.
